Reflective summery

This year I would say I have learnt almost a comparable amount to my whole other three years at University. My project has gone from very ambiguous beginnings to a something that I consider to have a sound foundation of theory behind it and a lot of personal value to myself.  I have encountered many gaps in my knowledge and skillset, and would say I perhaps took on a project with not enough of the fundamentals for me to realise it to its full potential, however, I now feel that I am substantially more equipped and informed that at the start of the project.
My main areas where I was lacking within my theory were the very information that I was trying to convey. I took higher physics in high school but when trying to understand to the level of being able to visually break down the elements to best be visualised was very difficult. I tackled this mostly in the first semester by immersing myself in every science video that I could find that were used in classrooms in science classes, luckily most of these are now uploaded to YouTube. By watching these I gained great insight as to how I could creative display them. This was the same approach I took to tackling my shortcomings within biology as I had never taken this past 2nd year of high school; it was one of the biggest mind hurdles. This was due to me having little background knowledge of the topic, so I found one of the main projects ‘DNA library’ to be really challenging as I had to go back to basics and brainstorm how best to visualise it to myself.  The fact that I started this project due to the struggles I encountered trying to lean the topics with the limited visual resources in school, gave a sense of irony as I sat trying to learn the broad strokes and finer details to better visualise them.
Areas that proved to be especially difficult to grasp were the ins and outs of genetic coding within chromosomes and DNA,
Looking at BBC bitesized and the online science videos also gave me a great insight into the visual style and age range that they were aimed at. This proved important to my project and to my personal development because it allowed me to analyse where my projects could be used in real situations within education or certain audiences, but it also allowed me to reflect on the lack of or poor visuals within in the industry and why this might be.
Bridging these gaps of what I knew about the topics I was trying to portray obviously greatly improved how I could break down the information and my offhand knowledge, but this also made thinking of new creative ways to communicate the messages, allowing me to develop my creative process and think outside the box.
Another area where my knowledge was think on the ground was semiotics and theory behind communication itself, I feel like I have a whole new level of understanding when It comes to how we learn and crate meaning though reading books that I read and online articles across difference disciplines dealing with using visual metaphors. This enabled me to think about the nature of my project itself and allow it to become more abstract in some areas. While reflecting on the process of trying to show how to learn something made it even clearer that everyone learns differently, as everyone has their own interpretations that are based on their own experiences. With this in mind it allowed me to be more creative as an artist, but also to realise that it is almost a feeling of understanding than I am trying to convey.  I wanted to be able to create something that can evoke a sense of connection between two objects that showcases their commonalities giving an insight into the working of a complex idea. However, this is only at a simple or basic level to establish a fundamental understanding and allows for creation and adaptation of one’s own mental model. In summary its helped me to grow my project and alter my expectations of learning theory.
Moving onto some of my practical skill gaps, I had never touched Ndynamics or any particles before this semester which again is hindsight was setting myself up for a challenge. After attending some of Lynns Dynamics classes I soon started using what I had learned to make my own simulations. I used these in tandem with some creative uses of spheres and emitters to what would in the end be the basis for the metaphorical visuals in my final animation.
This knowledge then grew when I was researching tutorials on how to make my own lava lamp, as I came across one that had modelling, dynamics and lighting in a project.  This was immensely helpful and really was a catalyst to my personal development and the project itself in several ways. Firstly I have struggled since the beginning of university with modelling but after the tutorial I am a lot more confident with the basics and would not be so put off making something from not knowing where to start. The tutorial also covered a very large section on dynamics that included an algorithm to make the lava float up and down. This greatly improved my knowledge of how the inputs change the outputs of animation, mesh and general understanding of volume axis fields.  Another areas where I was lacking in experience was with shaders, which I have now grasped a good understanding of how to using the mia_x materials that renders with mental ray and also combing that with sub surface shaders to generate a very versatile effect. Im sure that this will be invaluable knowledge and will help with future projects as it creates a foundation for me to build upon.  The last area the tutorial cover that was also of great benefit to my leaning was with the lighting section, where I learned how to use settings that were effective for production and rendering of the scene. It also guided me on using the physical sun and sky in tandem with portal lights. So overall it gave me a fantastic foundation on so many levels that it allowed me to further most aspects of my project and practice my polishing my main scenes.
Another technical reflection would have been on learning new aspects about render layers and render passes that are another feather in my creative cap, I had loosely used them before but looking up articles and uses for altering the final image.  Overall im a very proud of my own achievements using Maya, I personally have never made something that looks as polished as it is in my final project. There are a lot of things still to develop on such as setting up complex scenes to a better degree and establishing a better filing system. Another big point that I need to work on is post production effects such as cutting the final animations together and then polishing them within that. The final developmental point is ironically my ability to maintain development documentation, I find that blogging is still just not my forte and will perhaps for future development use mixed media such as a voice over and images to convey my progress.

35. The final cuts.

For the into to the final cut , im not 100% happy and it needs some work before the showcase, but i wanted  something more than just static images of sentences and i thought it went well with the rotating globe, It has some context setting and thought provoking sentences, trying to set the tone and create some intrigue. I think with a bit more work it will be just what the animation needs. It also highlights that much like poetry the animation is more interpretive allowing the viewer to make new mental connections between to objects that have commonalties, reflecting a more complex topic.
I want to create a seamless background before the showcase and it is very clear at least on my computer and i feel it breaks the visage a bit.

I am the most happy with this scene, its cinematic and sets the bar for the rest introducing the globe to the view, but in a new context setting the notion that its about the planet. But initially it starts with something familiar just the globe texture, something the viewer may of see in a classroom - it then changes into something more planetary until there is a shot with the earth to the left and looking at the sun and distant planets. This sets the tone that it is also related to the actual earth, evoking an iconic apace image to the viewer.
Things to work on is the lava, possible replacing it with a more fluid viscous one as it would connect better with the metaphor in the next scene . Also there are issues with the lighting coming up with random square in the background that is very distracting. this problem is that this scene takes 25 hours to render out, but i hope to fix it for the showcase

Moving to the next scene we are then swung round  the glob into a new setting where it has taken its classroom globe form, relating back to familiar touchable object that they may of interacted with. We then see the lava lamp and pass through it holding on a shot of both objects in frame. At this point the viewer is wondering what the connection is maybe thinking about he words at the beginning.
The camera then passes though the glass taking us though the lava into space again, where the dots are connected and you see the metaphor dynamics shifting and changing shape like continents. it then pans out for the same shot as in the fist one, relating both objects to be the same in some way .

And here is the final animation. I think that it works as a provocative piece and is far more abstract that I could of ever imagined, however i think that it reflects the core of my idea in that these two seemly unrelated objects have similar attributes that if viewed in a certain way can help to visualise the continents moving over millions of years shaping, shifting, changing. This is the more expressive of the two projects and possible improvements are that the final cutting of the scene could of been done better to ensure the viewer is seeing the images in the right sequence for the best affect in evoking mental pictures and connecting the dots. I think that within a classroom this has a place as a more expressive and creative way of thinking about the continents, especially to those just embarking in geography with little grasp of the topic.

Here is the first version of the bookcase animatic, with more time i would of wanted it to be the full animation, however i think that it does carve out the broader strokes of the idea. Its a strong concept and is the more structure and model based of the two metaphors, aim less at giving a mental model within the viewers head to better grasp the complex topic of genetics.
I think the tranistion is a strong starting point and its clear that its a cell changing into a bookcase, i think it would benefit from a voice over or accompanied text - which im going to do for the showcase and presentation. The weakest part and the lest effective bit is where the fathers book is introduced. At the point where the mothers books changes to blue eyes we have already surpassed the introduction to standard grade biology. I think this speaks volumes to its use in education as it gives them something to imagine in a very complex topic where nothing is viable in front of you and the scale is even harder to picture.

this is a second version with the ambient occlusion taken off the first few renders as it softens the bookcase giving it more of a foetus like feel.
all the pieces are there, it just needed more time and accompanying voice over or text to perhaps one version speaking purely in biological terms and the visuals provide a substitute image.
I would like to keep working on this project as i think it has great value to it and there is a lack of materials for the visual learner, it is a natural way of learning and something we do on a daily basis without knowing it.

34. Tieing it all together

Here goes, its the last post before the final animations, this is going to be a big one so i may have to finish it up tomorrow.

I have been working hard on bringing it all together and iterating on the sequences before submission on monday. Ill go thought the main project continental drift first .
I did another iteration of the lava dynamics to try to get it looking more fluid like the metaphor in the other scene however it needs a touch more work and i just dont have much time left, i may sort it and get it rendered out for the showcase,

Above is one of the final renders of the dynamics metaphor scene

it breaks apart, it comes together, it gets lighter on one side depending on the light. Is as close as i can get to what i wanted. I ended up making my own tectonic plates and weighting them to pull and push the particles around which was super effective and was just the trick i was looking for, took a long time to get right but it worked out in the end.

With all the work i put im im really happy that its come out so well

Here is a final shot of the globe scene, after a lot of meetings with Brian recently on the composition, i have been considering a lot what order the scenes and images are placed in. Its very important as this is the more abstract of the two metaphors so its key to activate the viewer mind with the right visual stimulant at the right time. You are given all of the inexpedience but they more be in the right order to make the recipe work best.

some renders of the globe close up, in the end i relied a lot on the text around the globe to signify it was the same globe as in space.

Here is one of the final shots of the lava lamp and globe scene.I really like it, and would say its some of the best work i have made, thought the lava lamp may of been a big challenge to get right , i have learnt so much and have really developed my practical skills.  this is the intermission in between the globe in space > to the metaphor  there are a lot of video links below that show the iterations of the animations and ill talk more there about the sequencing.

Here is the first render of the embryo, looking great especially in such a short amount of time. there is artifacts on the surface due to the squashed mesh but i think it even adds to the embryo/ cell feeling

here are some of the cell morphing into the bookcase

and a final image of the bookcase full of the chromosome books, there are a few texture issues with one or two books, but i hope to short that for the showcase.

I added an ambient occlusion to all the images to give it a bit of depth and i think it really makes it look a lot better.

A render of he mothers book opening to the coded pages of the genes

and then changing to what it actually denotes, which is blue eyes

and here the chance to put text explaining the recessive and dominate genes

Metaphoretest_05

above is a peak at the tectonic plates that drive the particles round , took a long time to figure out but seems logical when dealing with continental drift, inspired by nature.

Metaphoretest_06

after many tests this is the final animation for the visual dynamics for the metaphorical scene. it needs shortening and put into the scene for final rendering along with adding the planetary lighting  but its almost there

possible lava substitute

above is the possoble replacement lava test, its a lot more fluid but there are a few jitters and it will take too long to fix befomre monday so im sticking with the one currently in scene for now.

here we have the first test of the metaphor within the space scene with the volume light giving it that planetary feeling

33/5. Baby bookcase

Right so ive been feverishly working on the animation

The books apear in pairs, one blue one red, each a volume or chromosome from the mother and father

the bookcase fills up gradually. Here i was focusing on getting the shader right and decided to use subsurface shader as it is coincidently what would look best to get an embryonic feel.

I wanted the white surrounding circle to fade out and become less cell like and allowing the bookcase to stand out

Below are iterations of the shader, truing to get the above images feel

It was about this render that i became happier with how it was looking and the general feel, it was still a bookcase but its colour attributes and more organic shape still denoted something cellar about it. I wanted the bookcase to look similar to when you shine a torch though your finger.

taking off the shiny highlights improved on this, as when submerged it would not have highlights.

This is a shot of the cell changing to the bookcase. see the links below for the animations.

I used blender to squash the bookcase into an embryo shape and then exported them both into maya and used a blend shape to animate the transition between them both, it was an extension of the blend shaping i did at the start of the yeah but i think this perfectly shows the reansition between embyro to embryo bookcase, giving a  clear  visual que as to what is hapening

Blend shaping of the bookcase success

Im happy with the transition, maybe a bit slow and the end needs worked on but im going to have a play and see if i can get it sorted ready for submission. cutting it fine though and the other project is also being worked

Blocking out the animation, books on the shelf

Bookcase animation

Within the above link is actually 4 different animations the first two are blocking out the bookcase and additions of books then the second two have the  first few book animations getting the timing blocked out and some cameras set up.

All still needs more work, timing needs sorted. I am considering just having images of the stages of the whole animations and putting them together as a animatic. I will see how tomorrow goes.

33/5. Pages of code

I have really neglected the other project, its just been all go with the other scene and i would rather have that one really nice and polished. However, this project is really important as it is one of the other types of metaphor. The continental drift metaphor is more abstract and draws upon natural commonalties such as the heat inside the globe to the heat in side the earth. This project on the other hand is about taking a well understood model and projecting that onto something very complex in a bit to rationalise it with something more relatable

So i have been diligently looking into how genetics work and using an extract from a book by Richard Dawkins have been formulating a way to best relay the genetics within a single cell

Below are pages for the rigged book i acquired .
Some letters are backwards as they appear on the mesh on the reverse page.

As seen in the blue sketch book development the books are the chromosomes, within the books are chapters - these are the genes- then within the genes are the amino acids or the words on the page.
see sounds simple, but it really was a nightmare to figure out.

So for an example, you take one of the red books off the shelf, lets say volume 10 and open it to chapter 6 and read the page finding out its about blue eyes.
What you are really doing it selecting chromosome 10 from mothers genetic material looking at a segment of the DNA within the material that makes up a gene. Within that you are then looking at some of the genetic coding that denotes the amino acids that are required to make blues eyes.

Breaking that down
cell/embryo - bookcase
shelves - nucleus
books - chromosomes
All pages together - DNA
chapters - genes
words - amino acids

Maybe i would of taken biology if it was put like that, but it was very hard to get my head round and write that down with trust in what i was saying was right. Safe to say i never did take biology.

So putting that into a practical input i made the final pages for the rig.
I wanted there to be coded pages with the T-A G-C (denote the amino acids needed) to be on the pages, then it changes just to say what they would make, so in this case blue.

So then it reads chapter 6, eye colour - blue.
I then wanted the blue fathers book of the same volume as the mothers to come in beside it for comparison, it would open to chapter 6 as well but the code this time would denote brown eyes.
with blue being recessive, the child would then have brown eyes from its father.
phew. I know some visuals would help to explain that bit, so i hope to get them up in the next few posts. I really want to have the animation at least blocked out for submission as i think that it works so well and is really backing up my project.

left page fathers eye colour

stacks of pages for both books

new book (newer genetic material) mother

new book (newer genetic material) father

Old book mesh (older genetic material ) father

right page fathers eye colour

Front of book and main animated book for the mother

Mothers eye colour right page

coded pages that appear before the coloured pages containing the amino acid codes

The main gold here was to keep it as true to genetics as i could but still getting those visual ques in so the viewer can try merge the model of the bookcase and associate it with the complex genetic information. For examples having the chromosomes on the spine of the books spines relates it more to picking a singular chromosome out of the 46 pairs and looking inside. vu just having them as books

33. Setting the scene and adding glow

After wanting to put an emissive type glow to the lava i followed the tutorial above and then tried to apply it instead to the sub surface shader by adding a light surface to an input... First attempt resulted in a fatal error. However after a few attempts and a bit of experimentations i got it working and it give off a slight glow even in the dark.

Here is the scene before adding the shader, I also re did all of the lighting again in the scene, i think the portal light broke.

Its looking really good and im happy with where the project is at, the dynamics are animating well and the lighting is really giving it some depth.

Another darker shot with the lamp giving off a bit of a glow

I love the way the lamp reflects within the globe, its almost perfect as the whole project is about how the globe reflects some of the attributes of the lava lamp and versa verse with the lava lamp. .

this is the lava at rest, for the transition into the next scene i would like to fade the lights out and have the metaphor emerge from the glowing base of the lamp. But im going to do some thumbnails to better decide how it will work.

I have also tinted the glass blue to reflect that the green continents are in blue water and then in the next scene there will be a blue haze that could represent the same effect. Creating more visual continuity and bringing the connections together

This scene test below is to showcase the glowing lava in the lamp, im pretty chuffed with it and think its coming together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmg16xZUCYQ

another scene test, but i think the glow is too much in this one. Again the lava at the top show not be brigther than the lava at the bottom, this ensures that its more realistic and so evokes more memories or accosioations with real lava lamps.
